OUR COMPANY HAS A FUTURE. AND AN
Without our past, we would not be the company we are today. A lot has happened in almost 70 years since our founding. Read on to learn more.
RISING FROM THE RUINS.
1946. Two men have a vision: to produce the very best preserved fruit, vegetable and pickled products. With this in mind, entrepreneurs Friedewald and Donath found the company today known as Spreewaldkonserve Golßen.
In 1951, the company was nationalised and became a state-owned enterprise. Everything that grew in the Spreewald region and surroundings was processed in the “Golßener Konserve”. The company kept thriving and acquired unparalleled expertise in processing fresh, herb-based pickled gherkins. Hundreds of small farmers from the region queued with their “Trabbi” cars in front of the gates of the plant, all carrying a few kilos of Spreewald gherkins and often a bunch of fresh dill with them. Soon everyone in the GDR (East Germany) only wanted one thing: the great products from Spreewald. The favourite, of course, was the crunchy Spreewald gherkins. Thanks to their delicious taste and excellent quality, the gherkins became “Bückware” (“rare goods”) in the GDR, which meant they were so sought after that there was never enough of them to go around.
GOOD BYE, LENIN.
In 1990, following the German reunification, the VEB Spreewaldkonserve was privatised and quickly faced enormous challenges. The company had great products but no experience in the free market economy under competitive conditions. Its economic future was at risk. But then siblings Karin Seidel and Konrad Linkenheil discovered Spreewaldkonserve Golßen – or “Spreewaldhof” for short.
THE TURNAROUND IS A SUCCESS.
Both Seidel and Linkenheil had followed in their father's footsteps and managed a hundred-year-old family company in the third generation, which was best known for its apple puree. To expand production, they travelled throughout Germany and found Spreewaldhof – and it was love at first “bite”. They were not only enthralled by the wonderful countryside, they were also fascinated by the long tradition of gherkin farming that dates back to the 17th century. Together with the employees, the siblings rolled up their sleeves and took on the project. It was particularly important to Seidel and Linkenheil to promote and support gherkin farming in the Spreewald region. With passion, commitment and expertise in producing fruit and vegetable specialities, the company grew and flourished, becoming one of the largest employers in the region. And the Spreewald gherkins soon became popular throughout all of Germany.
SPREELINGE – A
SYNONYM FOR REAL
The unique origin and unmistakeable taste of our Spreewald gherkins needed to be given its own name. Since the harvest in 2003, our classic pickled gherkins have been called “Spreelinge”. And our famous puree made from top-quality apples is called “Das andere Apfelmus” (“the different apple puree”), highlighting the special taste that our cold grating method brings out.
