WE ARE SPREEGIONAL.
Commitment to our region is an integral part of our company culture. Our most important priority is to preserve and maintain the regional farming operations and the continuation of the traditional gherkin pickling process in the Spreewald region. That is why we advocated in the EU for official recognition of the uniqueness of the original Spreewald products – with success. In 1999, “Spreewälder Gurken” (“Spreewald Gherkins)” was designated a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Today, we are happy that every customer can be certain that gherkins labelled as Spreewald are definitely harvested in the Spreewald region.
WE MANUFACTURE SUSTAINABLY TODAY, SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO DO SO IN THE FUTURE.
Sustainable production means conserving resources. Therefore, we concentrate all of our work steps, from harvesting to processing the gherkins, in one place – the Spreewald. This keeps the transport routes from the field into the jar as short as possible – and means our products are ultra fresh. By promoting and supporting gherkin farming in Spreewald and continuing to use traditional recipes, we help preserve flavour variety and cultural diversity in Germany.
OUR GOAL: REDISCOVERING TRADITIONAL FRUITS
Such as gooseberries, for example – a classic in the past, but now very rarely grown on farms in Germany. To change this situation, we set up a 20 hectare plantation in cooperation with a local farmer in 2009. Our long-term goal: To ensure that all gooseberries we process come from the region. We have not quite reached this goal yet, but today we grow and cultivate gooseberries on an area spanning 50 hectares.
"SUSTAINABILITY HAS ALWAYS
PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN
WE USE OUR ENERGY
TO SAVE ENERGY.
We are constantly thinking about how and where we can make our company more energy efficient. And we have accomplished a lot already, for example by using multiple circuits, residual heat, and cooking procedures that treat waste water and generate biogas at the same time. We have also set up an energy management system and built a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, so we can produce even more power ourselves. Even the roofs of our buildings make a contribution, thanks to photovoltaic panels.
WE PROMOTE AND SUPPORT THE REGION, BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE OUR ROOTS ARE.
The Spreewald region is very close to our hearts, which is why we promote and support the preservation of the natural surroundings and its traditions, for example as a member of the “Spreewaldverein”, an association that is committed to market the region and its products. We also participate in numerous events, including the “Gurkentag” (“Gherkin Day”), when traditional Spreewald clothing is worn and classic specialities are prepared using traditional handcrafted methods.
